The Islands Adventure
On May 25th we left lovely Francavilla al Mare, and with our DTS team headed north-west to visit the British Isles for two months.
So... it was a plane flight to Stansted, two overnight buses across England to Liverpool and onto a ferry FULL of excited bikers (and their motorbikes) to the Isle of Man, Sue's birthplace, where we patrolled the lanes of Douglas with some of our Manx friends between 8pm and 2am as the 'Street Angels', helping to keep vulnerable people safe.
Sometimes they had been celebrating a little too hard, or maybe had lost their phone, their friends or their way. Some nights were wet and windy...and a few were not.
On top of Snaefell, the highest point on the island, we were almost blown away!
Moving on from the 'Extraordinary Isle' to Leeds we spent a few days helping a young family pioneering a YWAM base there, then went on to Sheffield, where our good friend Anj has started a great community hub and boardgame cafe, which we were able to support in various practical ways, whilst enjoying lots of games with new friends.
Really chuffed to have solved the problem of displaying menus effectively...with LEGO!
With the loan of a couple of cars from very generous friends and relatives, we were able to spend a few days of R&R in the beautiful city of York before driving slowly north to Edinburgh and the lovely Wellsprings Community, our home for the next month, (where we took hardly any photos!)
What did our time there look like? Maintenance and painting, sewing, counselling, gardening, meals at the beach, climbing Arthur's seat in Edinburgh, litter picking, praying with people, leading a service, attending home groups, a Scots ceilidh (dance)...and of course meeting some amazing new friends.
In our final week, leading up to the DTS graduation, we helped to prepare for, attend (and clean up after) 'Glory in the Cowshed', a four-day Christian festival held near Crieff in the Scottish Highlands.
Not quite everyone...seven couldn't come to Scotland, or had to leave early. But all graduated!
It's been a joy and a privilege to be alongside such an amazing bunch of people these last five months.
Enjoying an afternoon tea for our very last 'Team Time' together - and we are still all good friends. Everyone packing their bags and preparing to head home again the next day. (Joe's not injured, he's face-painted!)
We will still be in the UK until the end of August, then planning to wend our way back to Perth via Vancouver and Mackay to visit family, then to Adelaide to catch up with friends before heading home to Perth in mid-September. Any cheap travel hacks are very welcome.
